Tips for Choosing Your Perfect Wedding Dress Based on Your Body Type
By: Niagara Wedding Helper | March 2018
One question that many Brides struggle with is how do you find your perfect wedding dress. There are so many amazing dress designers out there and so many stunning dresses to choose from. The problem is, that the style of wedding dress you might think you like the most, is not always the style of wedding dress that will look the best on your particular body type. The easiest way to find the best dress for your body type is to look for dresses with a silhouette that will highlight your favourite assets and conceal your not so desirable ones. In order achieve this, your must first determine what body type you are. Keep in mind, however, that most people do fit into one particular category. Second, you must trust your Wedding Dress Consultant. Listen to what they are saying and dont be afraid to try on dresses that you might not normally have tried on. Finally, bring a supportive group of people with you.
Determining your body type can be a little tricky. As mentioned above, most people dont fall into one particular category. The best way to do this is to figure out which of the five main body type categories you body is most similar to and then shop for dresses that best suit those categories. The five main body types are as follows:
Rectangle Shaped: Women with this body type usually have very little difference between the width of their shoulders, waist and hips. It is suggested that they should look for dresses that add volume and detail to their chest and hips to create the illusion of curves.
Hour-Glass Shaped: Women with this body type usually have a similar width in their shoulders and hips, with a smaller and more defined waistline. It is suggested that they should look for dresses that show off their curves.
Inverted Triangle Shaped: Women with this body type are usually widest at their shoulders, while their waist and hips taper inwards. It is suggested that they should look for dresses that help define their waistline.
Pear Shaped: Women with this body type are usually widest at their hips, with narrower shoulders and a somewhat defined waist. It is suggested that they should look for dresses that either help to de-emphasize their lower body or help to emphasize their upper body.
Oval Shaped: Women with this body type usually have shoulders and hips with a similar width and a fuller mid-section. It is suggested that they should look for dresses that help define their waistline, making it appear slimmer.
Once you have determined what body type(s) you best fall into, it is now time to start trying on dresses that best suit that body type. There are five main Wedding Dress Styles. These include Ballgown, Sheath, Mermaid, A-Line, and Short. Out of these five wedding dress styles (which are shown below), choose the style(s) that works the best with your particular body. Again, dont be afraid to try on dresses that your Bridal Consultant suggest. They work these dresses and with Brides of all shapes and sizes all day long so they usually have a good idea on what will or will not work.
Ballgown Wedding Dress:
The Ballgown Wedding Dress, also known as a "fairy tail" or "princess" wedding dress, is fitted in the upper body with a full and dramatic skirt. This type of dress works well with most body types. For women with a rectangular shaped body, it can help to create the illusion of curves. For women with a pear shaped body, it helps to de-emphasize their lower half by concealing it under its full skirt. For women with an inverted triangle shaped body, it helps to balance their wider shoulders. And for women with an oval shaped body, it helps by creating a more defined waistline. This type of dress, however, is not recommended for petite brides as it can overwhelm their smaller body frame.
Sheath Wedding Dress:
The Sheath Wedding Dress is a narrow cut dress that flows down along the bodies natural shape. This type of dress works well for women with a rectangular or straight body shape, especially those who are petite, as it creates a lean and lengthening effect. It is also good for women with the hourglass shape, as long as they are willing to show off their curves.
Mermaid Wedding Dress:
The Mermaid Wedding Dress is slim through out the body and hips with a skirt that flares out either mid-thigh or at the knee. This type of dress works best with women who have an hourglass body shape and are willing to show off their curves. It also works well for women who have an inverted triangle body shape as it can add some balance to their broader shoulders.
A-Line Wedding Dress:
The A-Line Wedding Dress is fitted through the upper body with a skirt that widens gradually to the ground in the shape of a "A". This type of wedding dress is very popular as it tends to work well with all body types.
Short Wedding Dress:
The Short Wedding Dress usually comes in three different lengths: tea-length, mini, and hi-low. The tea-length wedding dress has a skirt hemline that falls between the ankle and the knee. This length tends to work well with all body types. The mini wedding dress has a skirt hemline that falls above the knee. This length tends to work well with both the rectangular and hourglass body types. Finally, the hi-low wedding dress has a skirt hemline that is lower in the back and higher in the front. Depending on how short the front hemline is, this type of dress can work well with most body types.
Now that you have figured out the best wedding dress for your body type, you can start looking at details such as whether you want lace or silk, a lot of beading and detail work or very minimal, white or ivory, dramatic and over the top or classic and simple. This is where bringing a supportive group of people with you can really help and be a lot of fun. Although choosing your perfect wedding dress can become very overwhelming, it doesn't have to be. By learning about your body type and knowing the style of dresses that most likely will work for you, listening to your wedding dress consultant and bringing supportive family and friends, wedding dress shopping can be a lot of fun!
